Globalization, A Boon or Bane ???

People around the globe are more connected to each other then ever before. Information and money flow more quickly than ever. Goods and services produced in one part of the world are increasingly available in all parts of the world. International travel is more frequent and international communication is commonplace. Globalization is an economic tidal wave that is sweeping over the world. It can’t be stopped, and there will be winners and losers.Global Manufacturing

Let’s consider some of the general pros and cons of globalization.

The disadvantages of globalization

1. “The general complaint about globalization is that it has made the rich richer while making the non-rich poorer. It is wonderful for managers and investors, but hell on workers and nature.”1

2. Multinational corporations are accused of social injustice, unfair working conditions (including slave labor wages and poor living and working conditions), as well as a lack of concern for the environment, mismanagement of natural resources, and ecological damage.

3.  Multinational corporations which were previously restricted to commercial activities are increasingly influencing political decisions. Many think there is a threat of corporations ruling the world because they are gaining power due to globalization.

4. Opponents say globalization makes it easier for rich companies to act with less accountability. They also claim that countries’ individual cultures are becoming overpowered by Americanization.

5. Anti-globalists also claim that globalization is not working for the majority of the world. During the most recent period of rapid growth in global trade and investment, 1960 to 1998, inequality worsened both internationally and within countries. The UN Development Program reports that the richest 20 percent of the world’s population consume 86 percent of the world’s resources, while the poorest 80 percent consume just 14 percent.

6. Social welfare schemes or “safety nets” are under great pressure in developed countries because of deficits and other economic ramifications of globalization.

The positive side of globalization

Globalization has a positive side as well. Supporters of globalization argue that it has the potential to make this world a better place to live in and solve some deep-seated problems like unemployment and poverty. The marginal are getting a chance to exhibit in the world market.

Here are some other arguments for globalization:

1. The proponents of global free trade say that it promotes global economic growth, creates jobs, makes companies more competitive, and lowers prices for consumers. It also provides poor countries, through infusions of foreign capital and technology, with the chance to develop economically and by spreading prosperity creates the conditions in which democracy and respect for human rights may flourish.

2. According to libertarians, globalization will help us to raise the global economy only when the involved power blocks have mutual trust and respect for each other’s opinion. Globalization and democracy should go hand-in-hand. It should be pure business with no colonialist designs.

3. Now there is a worldwide market for companies and consumers to access products from different countries.

4. There is a world power that is being created gradually, instead of compartmentalized power sectors. Politics are merging and decisions that are being made are actually beneficial for people all over the world.

5 There is more influx of information between two countries.

6. There is cultural intermingling. Each country is learning more about other cultures.

7.  Since we share financial interests, corporations and governments are trying to sort out ecological problems for each other.

8. Socially we have become more open and tolerant towards each other, and people who live in the other part of the world are not considered aliens.

9. Most people see speedy travel, mass communications and quick dissemination of information through the Internet as benefits of globalization.

Globalization has already started to affect our careers. We are writing this essay as NC State students, which says a lot about the impact of globalization on business schools’ students.

We think that there are two major ways our careers will be affected: French businesses are starting to be more global., trying to enter foreign markets. This gives us the opportunity to deal with companies abroad, to travel, to speak foreign languages. We might be sent overseas to develop a subsidies for a few years. Globalization is not only about living abroad our speaking a different language, but trying to deal with a new culture. This is the most difficult part.
Each and every company trying to develop its business abroad must take into account the cultural aspect.

The other way globalization might affect our careers, is by working for a foreign companies. In this group, a lot of us have been interning into american companies who have headquarters in France. They need to hire a local workforce to understand quickly the market.
We could also work for a company abroad. More and more companies are looking to have international profiles, they see this as an asset which is a good thing for us. Even third world countries are developing their businesses and might be interested by hiring graduates from well developed countries such as France.

Globalization is not a new trend, it has been going on for a few decades now, but we might be the first generation who will be affected from the beginning of our careers. Must of us already had international profiles even entering our business school. Last but not least, we want to be affected by globalization it is nos something that we fear.

Globalization 2014-2030: how will it impact your gameplan ?



Globalization can create opportunities for our professional career. Indeed, when applying for a job, we will not only target one country but the entire world. As our scope is wider, we will have more chances to get a better job and / or salary. Going abroad is also a good way to get many different experiences and knowledge. By working in several companies and countries we will be able to bring inputs that the others do not have. As knowledge is power, you will be irreplaceable!

We have no choice: as a manager, we will have to cope with foreigners… even if we stay in France. Having at least one multicultural experience will allow us to be more comfortable and knowledgeable within international teams. Working with foreigners mean we will step outside of our comfort zone and learning how to “think different”. This is very relevant in job interviews.


Now we will talk about the possible drawbacks that Globalization may have for the development of our professional career. One of the biggest issues with globalization is outsourcing. It has an important effect on the job market worldwide. For instance, in the United States, it is estimated that over 2 million workers have lost their jobs in the last several years due to business closures and layoffs (Benjamin and Perry 2003), simply because of the growing number of companies that are moving their operations to other countries where the cost of wages is cheaper.Another issue is that because of globalization, economic crisis in one country spread to all the others, and lead to many people loosing their job worldwide.


We believe that globalization offers incredible opportunity for people, and companies. The world is open for anyone to succeed. However, due to globalization, the world is a fast paced place where people and company are easily replaced by others.

Globalization, Group 1, MSC FMI, RALEIGH : ” Globalization 2014-2030: how will it impact your gameplan ? “

Globalization is a long process started centuries ago. This dynamic phenomenon has been set up by both commercial and financial internationalization transactions. The intensification and the liberalization of exchanges accelerated its spread worldwide creating a real interdependency between countries.

The free circulation of goods, services, capital, people, ideas, knowledge and technology have intensified the development of the globalization notion. In a concrete way, globalization leads to a blurring of national boundaries where ‘the world is becoming a global village’.

In our case, globalization has already impacted us on an educational level; mobility has changed our educational landscape. Studying and completing internships abroad is becoming a common use and even a must for being competitive in our working world. Universities are playing a key role in promoting students to pursue this global state of mind.

Work mobility has become commonplace. Indeed, with all multinational-firms the average stay in a company has strongly decreased in the few decades from 15 years to 5 years. Our adaptability in jobs is crucial for the sake of differing working methods that come with cross-cultural teams and leadership management. And this even more true with the developing countries, the BRICS, which will be the markets of tomorrow.

For the next couple of years the main issue we face is not a matter of being the most proficient at a single task but instead to be adaptable to cross-boarder market demands of an ever-changing dynamic world.


Group 4 @FMI Raleigh – Globalization 2014-2030: how will it impact your gameplan ?

The phenomenon of globalization has brought a lot of challenges throughout the world. Some became issues but others offered the chance to every country to be represented on an international level. Being in our last year of Master makes us think about the workplace as a new challenge. And even if thinking about finding a job could be a puzzle to solve, we are aware that opportunity can be anywhere thanks to globalization.

Globalization’s positive points during the last decades were considerable. We saw the global economy being tied between countries. The emergence of international organizations made it easier to trade, offering better to every country, especially the non-developed ones.

The financial markets are more dependent than ever and it is offering a large amount of possibilities for investments that we have to be aware of.  Our main challenge is to stay conscious that working in one country does not mean we have to ignore the world’s issues.

Today, the world is willing to intergrate and to share diverse culture and knowledge in order to face the challenges of tomorrow. Skema Business School is one example of globalization with campuses around the world. Thanks to this situation, nowadays a student can hope to be part of something much more bigger than yesterday.

All our group members don’t have not the same professional project, but we agree about the fact that gloabalization will be one of the mainly role in our career, whatever the way we will choose in the future.

Nevertheless globalization is not only an opportunity, but also is a danger. The diverse financial system will be tied closely, which means that the world’s financial crisis could be evaluated by one country’s economic problem. Therefore, risk control and supervision will become more and more significant. The awareness of risk, strict ethical standards and professional regulators are needed in order to minimize risk.


Our main objective as future worker is to know the impact that globalization will influence on our job. We have to be prepared to be part of the diversity. Being able to know as much as we can on different countries’ culture, history, regulation and customs, will help us make the difference on the workplace.


Group 8 @IB Raleigh – Globalization 2014-2030: how will it impact your gameplan ?

Globalization is the process by which economies, societies and cultures have become interconnected. This translates into an increasing flow of goods, services, but also people and knowledge. When we raise the issue of globalization and employment, themes such as threat to job security, downsizing to remain competitive often come up. If globalization will definitely affect our career, we have a different perspective than the one previously exposed.

Our group is composed of six people and four different nationalities : French, Moroccan, Spanish and Russian. We are all international students, who are studying on the Raleigh campus and think, globalization will have a positive impact throughout our career. In fact, the world around us today has become integrated : mobility has significantly increased and barriers have diminished. While our parents only considered working in their home country, we have the ability to market the entire world. Moreover, our study abroad experience provides us with a global experience. Not only do we study in a foreign country, but we confront new, unfamiliar situations daily. Globalization has shaped each and every field of employment and companies need people, who are able to understand such an environment and manage it.
However, if globalization offers us new possibilities, it does the same for other international students and employees. To turn these new possibilites into opportunities, we need to stay ahead of the game. Globalization pushes us to keep learning and developing our skills and what makes us unique in the job market. In our case, we can mention mastering at least two languages, our ability to adapt and be flexible.

As global citizens, globalization represents a great opportunity for us, as long as we are able to act global while keeping what makes us unique.
